scores and zines for embodied practices

pool of vibrations - vol 1

Pool of Vibrations is a collaboration with photographer, Joanne Jones. Inspired by the reflective, obliterative and refractive nature of mylar paper. Joanne captures Ariel on a nearly deserted beach, as she manipulates the mylar material to reveal and obscure the body. The zine includes additional images from Joanne’s body of work interrogating image and perception.

mover / witness exchange

A scoring practice with << Lisa F, Lena, Meredith + Lilach, Lisa P, Christopher, Lexie, Amelia >>

Focusing on ways to decenter the exterior body as the indicator of assumed identities and qualities and use embodied expression as the primary portal through which one gets to experience themselves and those they share and engage with. A practice that transcends verbal discourse and centers personal expression, seeing and being seen, and explores finding a level of perception of self and others that evokes deep respect and empathy.

*inspired by Authentic Movement practice, disrupted by the writing and consideration of Eila Goldhan’s Is Authentic a meaningful Name for the practice of Authentic Movement

invitation score:

I’m inviting you into a shared practice with me.
To build a relationship with you through movement, witnessing and being witnessed.

I want to get to know you:

your desires
your intuition
your expression

and share mine with you

An invitation to exchange. Go deeper. Tune into your senses. Close your eyes.

structuring score:

One person enters the space (the mover) and engages in an improvisational practice in which your choices are guided by your innate wisdom. You're invited to allow your senses and intuition, desires and preferences to dictate – there is no right or wrong. This can show up in all different ways - sounding/singing, holding stillness, vigorous movement, etc.

The mover is encouraged to do this practice with their eyes closed.
This is twofold :

1) to tune into the sensing and

2) to remove any distractions or judgment that can be taken in by seeing.

The other person(s) actively witnesses the mover in the space, staying on the periphery, holding the container of space for the mover.

The witness accepts the mover without analysis or direction and makes sure the mover stays safe, speaking or providing touch only to let them know they are close to making contact with a wall, or window, or any other obstacle in the space.

in space together:
Warm up / check in
Read / center
3 min exchange (2x)
5 min exchange (2x)
15 min exchange (2x)
Draw/Track your experience

questioning score:

How do we find the unexpected? How do we create the parameters together? How do we hold space for one another without controlling its edges?

(for) SCORED: PUBLIC WORKS - issue #1
a collection of scores on paper (diagrams, writing drawings, etc) that chronicle imagined or real dances sited in public places. For the complete collection of scores featuring contributing artists: Laurel Atwell, Phoebe Berglund, Josie Bettman, Juli Brandano, Billy Brandano, Leah Fournier, Amelia Heintzelman, Jeremy Jams, Ariel Lembeck.

The invitation from the curator, Juli Brandano: When all the resources required for making dance disappear during a pandemic— indoor rehearsal studios, funding, other dancers—how do we proceed? This time has laid bare the extent to which I rely on private institutions to even have a creative practice. In this moment, making dance is becoming increasingly public activity. For me, it’s also becoming an increasingly imaginative activity: I’m writing and drawing scores for dances that will likely never exist. Perhaps you’ve been doing the same?
